What is the Au.D.?
The Au.D. (Doctor of Audiology) is a professional entry level degree for the practice of Audiology.    Au.D. is also the designator identifying the practitioner as an Audiologist.  Au.D. programs prepare students to provide hearing and balance care services.  The four year post-baccalaureate programs expand the knowledge base and training experience over the master's degree and include at least a year of clinical rotations.  Establishing the Au.D. frees Ph.D. programs to concentrate on clinical and laboratory research in Audiology.  One need look no further than medicine, dentistry and optometry to observe professional doctorate programs and rigorous Ph.D. programs successfully co-existing and meeting the needs of those professions and consumers.
